Jasper James
James set the tone of fun and frivolity for the sex-charged expository film Shortbus, based on the decade-old queer radical art space Dumba Collective. She spent over a year living there with the film's director/writer John Cameron Mitchell, and was inevitably changed. James' music is more political, with anti-materialistic, community aspirations. "At 14, I saw the transition [of Fire Island] from a place very heavily populated by gay men, then everyone started to die [of AIDS]. They'd leave all their real estate land to the gay women who championed them and took care of them," says James, who laments the divisions now visible in the community. James, currently writing music for Renee Wilson and collaborating with hip-hop artists Unconscious Logic, will release an album in November. –MW
