Fanny Fuentes
Given that Hispanic women are three times more likely than non-Hispanic white women to be diagnosed with less-operable stage-four breast cancer, the work that Fuentes does as the Spanish Speaking Outreach Educator at New Jersey’s Mountainside Hospital is crucial. The Montclair Breast Health Center administrative supervisor says that what she recently read in the journal Cancer, "frightened and saddened me, it made me realize how important it is to get out to raise awareness among Latinas about the importance of self breast exams and mammograms." Fuentes, 34 of El Salvadorean descent, leads discussions with small groups of women once or twice a month. "Our patients really inspire me with their strength and courage," Fuentes says. –MW
