100 Women We Love 2011

The 100 Women We Love – out artists, elected officials, business leaders, athletes, community activists – are role models for us all. Many are up-and-coming movers and shakers; some are at the zenith of their careers. Some of their achievements change our world and, just as importantly, others improve the world’s perception of out women. They all strive tirelessly to increase our visibility and continue our incredible progress toward equality and justice.

We proudly present the class of 2011, in random order, so each gets her well-deserved turn in the spotlight.

CONNIE IDAVOY

Born in Spain and raised in Cuba, Connie Idavoy has been an entrepreneur, business leader and LGBT advocate for most of her 63 years. As a sales manager in the insurance industry in the 1970s, she was the first woman staffer promoted to management. She translated her corporate acumen into small business ownership in Puerto Rico and New York, and was named Woman of the Year for Minority Business Enterprises in Nassau County, NY. Since 2008, Idavoy has owned Bum Bum Bar in Queens, and is a past board member of both Queens Pride House and Las Buenas Amigas, the organization for Latina lesbians. “Study and hard work will always pay, no matter where you come from,” Idavoy says. “Intelligence will help you beat obstacles; dedication will help you gain respect; inspiration will keep you going.
