100 Women We Love 2006

Meet the class of 2006

Angela Robinson

Writer/director Robinson is a rare example of a crossover success. After a stint at NYU Graduate Film School in the mid-90s, she assisted Spike Lee while making several short films of her own. She returned to her hometown of Los Angeles in 2004, and her short film D.E.B.S., a story about teen spies with a lesbian subtext, was made into a full-length feature. A year later, she directed Lindsay Lohan in Herbie Fully Loaded. Robinson said, “The feature of D.E.B.S. is my proudest accomplishment. Whether people love it or hate it, it’s absolutely what I meant—my vision, from start to finish—and that’s very satisfying. I’m also proud of Herbie. Being able to work on that scale in the studio system is depressingly rare for a woman, and I’m proud to have scaled that wall.”
