100 Women We Love: Class of 2006

Laura Pople
As president of the New Jersey Lesbian and Gay Coalition, Pople is instrumental in securing rights and visibility for gay Jerseyans. In 1992, Pople helped found both the Coalition and Jersey Pride, and remains heavily involved in both. She worked with legislators in Trenton and with allies at Lambda Legal to pass domestic partnership legislation and is now working with the Gender Rights Advocacy Assocation of New Jersey (GRAANJ) to add gender identity and expression to New Jersey’s Hate Crimes Bill-a pressing need since the 2003 murder of Sakie Gunn in Newark. Pople said of her work, “There is nothing like standing in the gallery and listening to legislators you have been lobbying…[taking] your eloquently pitched position to their colleagues.”
