Elizabeth Whitney
Performer Elizabeth Whitney has a particular affinity for iconic women. She recently performed her solo show Wonder Woman The Musical! at the ABSOLUT Gay & Lesbian Theatre Festival in Dublin, Ireland. While there, Whitney also appeared on Irish National Radio 1 and talked about feminist superheroes, whom Whitney describes as “strong, smart, beautiful, walking with poise and integrity, and interested in reflective approaches to solving problems.” Her latest work, A Day Without Sunshine, explores the career of former beauty queen and homophobe Anita Bryant. Whitney says, “I’m fascinated by right wing activist women like Bryant, who seek political power while at the same time denouncing feminist ideals which would otherwise support women claiming power in public space. And, having grown up in the south, she intrigues me as a model of constrained femininity. Most of my work takes iconic femininity and tries to queer it in some way, and Bryant seemed like a perfect challenge!” -CB
Remember, these are in no particular order because we love them all!
