Dr. Kate O’Hanlan
When we asked Dr. Kate O’Hanlan to name one of
the biggest obstacles LGBT people face in getting the care they need, she answered quite simply, “finding a respectful, non-homophobic doctor.” O’Hanlan herself fits that description nicely. A cancer surgeon specializing in gynecologic oncology, she is also a leading advocate for LGBT health. Her advocacy has taken many forms, from authoring numerous articles on LGBT health for medical journals to presenting on LGBT health issues at the National Institutes for Health. O’Hanlan has also compiled medical evidence supporting the need for same-sex civil marriage, and in 2008, testified to the California Assembly on her findings. She also served as the President of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association in 1993 and is currently a consulting medical professional for Marriage Equality USA. –CB
Remember, these are in no particular order because we love them all!
