100 Women We Love: Class of 2009

Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.

Jane Velez-Mitchell

In her new book, iWant: My Journey from Addiction and Overconsumption to
a Simpler, Honest Life
, Emmy Award-
winning television journalist Jane Velez-Mitchell discusses her journey through substance abuse, her decision to go vegan and her decision to come out. She says, “Not until I became physically and
emotionally sober could I make good
decisions.” Velez-Mitchell credits financial guru Suze Orman with inspiring her to come out: “I saw her telling her story and
I wanted to be completely open.” As host of HLN’s Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell, she covers the most important events
of the day. As an animal rights activist and environmentalist she says, “Peace begins within and on your plate!” Going green is not just a political statement for her. She carries a biodegradable bag when shopping and caulks her tub with
environmentally safe material. How’s that for lez credentials? -KD

Remember, these are in no particular order because we love them all!
