100 Women We Love: Laryssa Husiak
We are thrilled to present the 2013 list of 100 Women We Love - Including...
Laryssa Husiak recently left her hometown of New York City to take her writing and performance career to the next level in Des Moines, Iowa. A longtime member the Obie-winning theater company Two-Headed Calf and its Dyke Division, Husiak has performed throughout New York City at Dixon Place, HERE and La Mama. Now armed with a 2013 Iowa Arts Council grant, Husiak has created the play She is King based on interviews with the tennis trailblazer and LGBT icon Billie Jean King. Marking the 40th anniversary of the legendary “Battle of the Sexes” match, where King beat the chauvinist player Bobby Riggs, Husiak shows King as a champion of a generation. “Recently, I presented She Is King in Des Moines, and we asked a group of six 10-to-13-year-olds to participate in the performance. Throughout the rehearsal process we were able to teach them about feminist and LGBT history, the influence of Billie Jean King, and explore their ideas of equality and human rights ,” Husiak reports. “I feel proud when I can connect with people, especially those outside my own cohort, and exchange ideas to create meaningful performance.” -JF
