100 Women We Love: Liesel Fischer, Psy.D.

We are thrilled to present the 2013 list of 100 Women We Love - Including...

Dr. Liesel Fischer combines an eclectic set of talents in art, activism and psychology to benefit the LGBT community. She got involved in advocacy while an undergrad at the University of Iowa, and later, as a graduate student in Chicago, by donating dozens of her own paintings and photographs to benefit the city's LGBTQ organizations. Fischer later served on the executive committee for Heartland Alliance’s annual Art Against AIDS events, one of Chicago’s top charity benefits according to Bizbash Magazine. Fischer’s activism earned her a spot on the Windy City Times' "30 Under 30" list. Her efforts to promote understanding and healing in the queer community became more focused in 2011, when she moved to Baltimore for a clinical psychology internship at Johns Hopkins University. There, she worked with LGBT college students and researched how families with transgender members achieve acceptance. She’s also worked closely with the Diverse Sexuality and Gender Alliance on initiating a Safe Zone program, and helped establish an institution-wide LGBTQ Resource Center. Today, Fischer is applying her breadth of specialized skills with a private psychology practice near Washington, D.C. Her philosophy, “Be grateful for those who stood up before you, and never stop paying it forward," also serves as a good motto for our community. “We can all be a role model for someone," she said. Fischer is practicing what she preaches.
