100 Women We Love: Lorena Garcia

We are thrilled to present the 2013 list of 100 Women We Love - Including...

Lorena Garcia is a hat trick of awesome. She’s an avid community organizer who’s ensured Colorado women's voices were heard. She played roller derby for the Rocky Mountain Roller Girls. Today, she is the Executive Director of the Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights (COLOR). As a child, Garcia watched her strong Chicano father and determined Mexicana mother work hard to be heard and acknowledged. That inner strength emerged early, when young Garcia would stand up to bullies at school and crush on female classmates. So it makes sense that she's devoted her career to LGBTIQ equality, women's legal rights, and organizing for social justice in education. "My job and my heart drive me to fight for access to information, services and anything we need to live our lives to the fullest," she says. A graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder, and former Progressive Leadership and Advocacy Network Fellow with the National Women’s Law Center, Garcia has served on multiple women's, Latina, and LGBT advisory boards and committees, and was awarded the 2011 Female Cesar Chavez Award in Colorado, where she lives with her wife. -DN
