100 Women We Love: Lynn Casper
We are thrilled to present the 2013 list of 100 Women We Love - Including...
Growing up in rural North Carolina fueled Lynn Casper’s desire “to give those who live in small, isolated communities something they can relate to.” Now, the multimedia artist, activist and strategist is doing just that, as the brains behind several extraordinary queer cultural projects. Casper is the founder and “pretty much everything-doer” of Homoground, a radio show dedicated to promoting LGBTQ and allied musicians and artists. “I started Homoground because I would have loved to have access to something like it when I was a kid,” she says. “Music and technology were always things that inspired and motivated me. I knew from an early age that I wanted to spend my life doing something related to those two things.” Casper is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post, and also co-founded the annual Pink Sheep Film Festival in Wilmington, North Carolina. to showcase films that highlight the struggles and triumphs of the queer community. But Casper’s not all work and no play: Last year, she organized the Feminist Playing Card project, which raised more than $12,000 via Kickstarter to create a custom deck of cards featuring illustrations of feminist musicians depicted by 14 different artists. Good deal. –QW
