100 Women We Love: Zebra Baby (Ali Ramos and Char Johnson)

We are thrilled to present the 2013 list of 100 Women We Love - Including...

First of all, rap duo Zebra Baby wants you to know they’re jazzed to be two of the 100 Women We Love. “To be acknowledged by such an influential LGBT magazine makes us feel like Betty White in that Snickers commercial!” they tell GO. The love is mutual, and they made our roster thanks to their proud efforts to become the first lesbian rap duo to break into the straight, male-dominated hip-hop music mainstream—and expose media outlets that perpetuate the separatist, sexist homophobic agenda. Plus, their music is awesome. Zebra Baby was born in 2010, when Char Johnson met Ali Ramos in New York City and recognized their mutual passion for rapping, its culture and its icons, from MC Lyte to Tupac. Early on, it was tough for the pair to find a space or venue welcoming to female rappers. So Johnson started throwing her own party called Poor Sellout in Williamsburg, where Zebra Baby debuted—and instantly exploded. They quickly signed with German indie record label ITD. When German mega-DJ Schlachthofbronx remixed a track from their 2011 album, it reached number one on the electronic charts, and Zebra Baby booked gigs all over New York, followed by tours in Switzerland and Germany. They’ve played with DAS Racist, Zebra Katz, Thee Satisfaction, and recently opened for Brandt Brauer Frick. The sweet stripes of success. –QW
