The Very Best of NYC Special Events

WOW Winter Wonderland, MLK Tribute, MASQ and Evolve

It’s that special time of year again when HRC Greater New York hosts its signature winter gala at the Waldorf Astoria. This year it’s called Evolve, and it promises to be a grand affair on Jan 31! Celebrate with other members of the community from the tri-state area while raising money for HRC. The evening includes a cocktail reception, silent auction, dinner and festive after-party.

Dress to impress on Jan 31 (black tie optional; masks encouraged!) at The Center’s super-sexy, annual masquerade party, MASQ, sponsored in part by Grey Goose vodka. All proceeds benefit The Center’s life-changing and lifesaving programs and services. This year’s festivities will take place once again at The Bowery Hotel—other details to be announced.

It's a WOW Winter Wonderland at WOW Café Theater on New Year’s Eve. Ring in 2015 while donating to a great cause—WOW—which will be transformed into a winter wonderland for their first annual holiday fundraiser. A whole slew of events will be offered throughout the day and night, such as an "Unleash Your Goddess" workshop with Lady Shepsa Jones, a movie screening, refreshments and much more. Then dance all night to the beats of DJ Administer; enjoy food, cheap drinks and stellar performances. The WOW New Year’s Eve party will include a champagne toast at midnight!

Are you a gay geek? If so, we know where you’ll likely be on Dec 20: the Gay Geeks of New York Fourth Annual Holiday Party at the Ritz. It’s a festive affair with a cheap cover, drink specials, free chances for a drawing, and–of course—tons of mingling with your fellow geek grrls!

You’ll want to be at The Center on Dec 19 for a very special event, First Comes Love: An Evening with B. Proud and Edie Windsor. Enjoy a night with talented photographer/author B. Proud as she discusses her new book First Comes Love: Portraits of Enduring LGBTQ Relationships. She will be joined by none other than Edie Windsor, who wrote the forward. Both will take part in a discussion about the book, followed by a Q&A and book signing. Beer, wine and sparkling water will be available for cash donations. Be there!

This year Martin Luther King Day is Jan 19, and what a better way to spend it than to share in the MLK Tribute at BAM; it’s NYC's largest public celebration of the civil rights leader. A highlight of the celebratory event is the keynote address by author, professor and activist Angela Davis. Following musical performances, there will be a free screening of the documentary Free Angela Davis and All Political Prisoners (2012), including an introduction by Davis.

On Jan 10 and 11, recycle, or rather “treecycle” your Christmas tree, Hanukkah bush or whatever you decorated this holiday season at MulchFest. Around 80 NYC parks are designated as drop-off points; check nycgovparks.org for locations in your neighborhood. NYC Parks hosts the annual two-day event to recycle trees into mulch that’ll help cultivate plants throughout the city—or in your own garden!
