Oprah Under Fire
The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy, the talk-show host’s $40 million school for disadvantaged girls in South Africa, came under fire in 2007 for the alleged abuse of several pupils by a dormitory parent. Winfrey, who has made no secret of the abuse she suffered as a child, issued a statement in which she said, “Nothing is more serious or devastating to me than an allegation of misconduct by an adult against any girl at the academy.” South African child protection services were notified and the dorm parent was removed from the campus. Oprah continues to take flack for opening the Academy overseas, rather than here at home.
