Finders Keepers, Losers Millionaires
Five years ago, New Yorker Elizabeth Gibson found a large, abstract painting in a pile of trash on West 72nd Street, and took it home. Gibson learned the painting’s identity when she recognized it on a television show about missing works of art. It turned out to be Rufino Tamayo’s Tres Personajes, and after she turned it in, it fetched a million bucks at a Sotheby’s auction in November 2007. It had been stolen from the original owners in 1987; they collected the auction proceeds and rewarded Gibson with $15,000 as a token of their gratitude. Gee, thanks guys.
