Women At The Helm 2010

These dynamos lead some of America’s most influential nonprofit organizations—they are fighting the good fight and their work enriches our lives in countless ways.

Winnie Stachelberg
Senior Vice President for External Affairs, Center for American Progress

A longtime LGBT activist at the highest levels of the movement, Winnie Stachelberg served as the vice president of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, where she launched a religion and faith program and revamped the National Coming Out Project, before becoming the senior vice president for external affairs at the Center for American Progress (CAP). She now oversees CAP’s LGBT project and manages the center’s outreach initiatives. Describing how she was drawn to nonprofit work at an early age, Stachelberg says, “I was brought up in a household that valued service—my parents instilled that in my brother, sister and me from a young age. I was a teacher and an advocate, and now work at the leading progressive think tank.” She adds, “many people have called CAP an ‘action tank,’ not just a think tank. I think that’s one of the most important parts of CAP. It’s not just that we think about change but we help make change happen.”
