Healthcare Reform
The healthcare reform bill passed this year after an agonizingly long battle. The bill will grant health insurance to approximately 2 million uninsured Americans and institute regulatory policies (such as banning pre-existing illness clauses) that will rein in the health insurance industry and benefit all Americans. On a related note, President Obama and the Department of Health and Human Services are writing new rules requiring hospitals that receive Medicare and Medicaid payments (in other words, nearly all of them) to grant all patients the right to designate people who can visit and consult with them at crucial moments. This law will have a tangible impact on lesbians and gay men, who now gainthe right to have their partners visit them in the hospital under this federal statute
