“MC Umlaut is my name, and femmes are my game,” read an email that sparked the romance of a lifetime. It came from Johanna, posing as a rapper from Switzerland who wanted to meet Gina and collaborate. Gina could not resist, later finding out that the Switzerland part was kind of true: Johanna lived there until age 16 and played professional hockey on a primarily lesbian team. Johanna figured out the key to Gina’s heart after watching her band Team Gina’s video for “Butch/Femme,” an ode to butch women. Their affair has included artistic collaborations and travel to art events across the United States and Europe, including Art Basel, the Venice Biennale and Photo LA. Gina and Johanna like to dress up in 1920s costumes for their dates, travel to places they have never been before and write love letters to one other. Madly in love and unabashedly romantic, both agree that their secrets to a successful relationship are honesty and considerate communication.
