Out Artists on the Rise

What do a gender-bending opera diva, an innovative guitar virtuoso and a queer electro-rap group have in common? They’re all part of our profile of 16 unique out musicians on the brink of stardom

Ingrid Dahl of The 303s

Ingrid Dahl, queer-identified singer, songwriter, master of the keyboards and guitar, is a new entry on the indie music scene. These many talents are on display in her first CD release, Lines of Parallel Minds, which she recorded as one half of the band, the 303s.

Dahl’s musical style varies from soft, haunting tones to loud, thumping rock with heavy percussion. The selections are thought-provoking original works that are more subversive, progressive and experimental. The song “Treaties” is mellow and subdued, but with a serious message about breaking commitments; “a sense of abandonment fills me, fills me,” she sings. The track entitled “Waves and Generation” is intense and troubling. This song reveals Dahl’s anger about the deterioration of feminism. Her emotion peaks in the verse, “We are coming apart at the seams…someone has to be there to sort things out.”

Dahl entered the music scene while in her mid-teens after spending her early years grooming, training and riding horses. The North Jersey native decided music was a vehicle to present her view of the world to a self-absorbed generation.

This young artist, who holds an MA in Gender Studies, is willing to share her love for music with talented rock-loving youngsters. As a founding member of the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, Dahl inspires 8–18 year-olds on the mastery of musical instruments, song writing and on-stage performance.
