Louisiana native Mary Gauthier’s newest release
Between Daylight and Dark was recorded (mostly) live, a distinct difference from her earlier, more polished releases. The result though, is a dark and poetic portrait of hope and melancholy set against a sadly strummed country guitar. Although the story of an emotional, and sometimes literal journey shines through over the course of the album, Gauthier explains, “As a writer I’m figuring out what my job is today, in this instant. What I did yesterday does not matter. I am more in the moment.”
Many of the songs on the album are about love and loss, familiar subjects for many folk/country troubadours yet Gauthier also addresses heavy-hitting subjects like Hurricane Katrina, in the song “Can’t Find the Way.” She says, “The song is ultimately about homelessness, whether it’s literal or metaphorical. I know that feeling.”
This is definitely an album to pick up if you like soulful alt-country ballads.
