Commemorate Empire State Pride Agenda’s continued progress and success towards winning full equality and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender New Yorkers and their families at the 2010 Fall Dinner. Hosted by Sarah Jessica Parker and Bravo honcho Andy Cohen on Oct 14 at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers, the event marks Pride Agenda’s victories and thanks the people who helped the organization create a better New York for all LGBT people.
Oct 18, join the Anti-Violence Project for the Courage Awards at the Prince George Ballroom and hosted by actor BD Wong. The awards were created more than a decade ago to honor outstanding individuals, organizations and corporations whose work on behalf of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and HIV-affected communities—particularly on behalf of victims and survivors of violence—has made a profound impact on all of our lives.
The Avon Walk New York provides an opportunity like no other—a true walking tour of the Big Apple with all the sites and landmarks of the city that never sleeps. From Hudson River Park to Greenwich Village to DUMBO, New Yorkers will take to the streets by the thousands to raise funds to fight breast cancer on Oct 16 and 17. Participants will walk up to 26.2 miles on Saturday and 13.1 miles on Sunday—all so that women and men can get the medical care they need regardless of their ability to pay, and to help research teams receive vital support in their ongoing search for a cure.
Oct 17, rally at the former St. Vincent’s Hospital on 7th Ave and W 12th St for 100 Days Without a Hospital. The event highlights the need for a new Village hospital and brings together the community to demand essential emergency and healthcare services in the neighborhood. Help stop the St. Vincent’s Building from being turned into luxury condos.
The SAGE Women’s Dance opens a new season on Oct 24 at LQ with the annual Fall Frolic, a dance for women of all ages. DJ Susan Levine provides the music to cover all eras and moods, from the oldies through the swing era to modern times. Then, Oct 25 at Gotham Hall, SAGE stages its 15th Annual Awards & Gala to honor several leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to LGBT rights and whose work has benefited the lives of LGBT older adults. Finally, Nov 11-13 at the CUNY Graduate Center, SAGE will hold its first-ever conference created by and for LGBT older adults. Based in the belief that LGBT elders are the experts on their lives, The Future of Aging Is in Our Hands will bring together hundreds of LGBT older adults from around the country to explore topics like reforming public policies to address the inequities that harm LGBT older adults and tackling ageism within and outside the LGBT community.
Mr. Showbiz, Murray Hill, is proud to present and host the legendary annual Miss Lez Pageant Oct 24 at the Knitting Factory Brooklyn. The Miss Lez Pageant is a wildly provocative and unpredictable alternative beauty pageant for queer womyn. Six contestants chosen from thousands of applicants will compete against each other in the following categories: platform, swimsuit, evening gown, interview and talent. Join PFLAG NYC on Oct 11 at Tribeca Rooftop for their annual Awards Dinner, a very special and unfortunately all too timely evening celebrating the growing Safe Schools Program and recognizing several people who contributed to making society safer for LGBT youth. PFLAG works to help families embrace and love their children through support programs; PFLAG NYC has made the Safe Schools Program a top priority to reach the estimated 100,000 LGBT students who struggle to find acceptance.
Hetrick-Martin presents The Emery Awards at Cipriani Wall Street on Nov 9. The Emery Awards provide an opportunity for friends of Hetrick-Martin to come together with new supporters and honor individuals and corporations who mirror Hetrick-Martin’s mission and have truly shown a dedication to LGBT youth.
