MIRIAM EHRENBERG
Executive Director, ihi-the institute for human identity

Miriam Ehrenberg, PhD, the executive director of ihi-the institute for human identity, began work at the not-for-profit LGBTQ psychotherapy center as a volunteer psychotherapy supervisor. ihi’s founders were instu- mental in the fight to remove homosexuality from the list of mental disor- ders of the American Psychiatric Association (a goal achieved in 1973). During her tenure at ihi, Ehrenberg has expanded ihi’s services to and about the LGBTQ community, developing a number of programs including mental health seminars for professionals and the first postgraduate pro- gram in LGBTQ psychotherapy. Ehrenberg says her proudest achievement at ihi is a program called Family Q, funded by the New York State Department of Health, which offers free workshops and counseling for LGBTQ families. She says, “It is so gratifying to see how valuable the work- shops are to participants. Because of their engagement and input, we have been able to add new workshops this year to address concerns they have brought up and cover a wider range of topics.”
