Playboy Publisher Pushes Marriage Equality

Thank you, President Obama, for giving hundreds of celebrities the courage to speak out on the issue of same-sex marriage. Now we can add Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy, to the list of straight celebs who support equality. Hefner took a stance on LGBT rights in the new September issue of the men’s magazine by adding a short editorial about his beliefs.

The fight for gay marriage is, in reality, a fight for all of our rights,” Hefner said.

This isn’t the first time Hefner has stood up for marriage equality. In the 2009 documentary Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel, he stated, “the idea that the concept of marriage will be sullied by same-sex marriage is ridiculous. Heterosexuals haven't been doing that well at it on their own.”

Hefner spoke about legislation and how people are practicing discrimination with the excuse that it is an issue of religious freedom versus gay rights. He believes that anti-gay activists will “criminalize your entire sex life.” We wouldn't want that, Mr. Playboy!

Hefner concluded the editorial with his thoughts on the nation as a whole.

This is a religious nation, but it is also a secular one. … No one should have to subjugate their religious freedom, and no one should have their personal freedoms infringed. This is America and we must protect the rights of all Americans," he wrote.
