DJ Carmin Wong, the daughter of traditional Chinese parents, has a letter for a middle name. “The middle name I was given is simply ‘L’, the letter ‘L.’ It can mean many things. ‘She is lovely, she’s loud—she’s a lesbian!’” Sporting her initial proudly, Wong is a rising music star known for her unique mix of progressive house and trance. Currently prepping to release her debut album Cooling, the L.A. resident (by way of Detroit) rocks the house every Tuesday night in Hollywood, serving as house D.J. at the Avalon Club, where Madonna, Britney Spears and Kylie Monique have all performed. She has also worked the turntables for Universal Studios and emceed the Gay and Lesbian Pride Festival in San Francisco, the fifth-largest Pride celebration in the world. Her first single, “For Eternity,” is now available on iTunes. “Deejaying allows me to share music with the masses,” says Wong, who will soon head to Honduras to shoot a video co-starring a great white shark. “In a melting pot like Los Angeles, you can’t just play one specific genre of progressive house and trance. You have to create a style for who you are,” she says. “I want people to relate to my music in every respect.” We get you, loud and clear. –NHM
