With the incredible advances in same-sex marriage rights this year—three states and counting!—it’s easy to overlook the years of hard work that go into achieving equality. Lisa B. Goodman, an attorney and the founding president of Equality Delaware, Inc., led the long fight to legalize same-sex marriage in the First State. Along with Mark Purpura, another out Delaware lawyer, Goodman ran Equality Delaware’s successful campaign to pass a civil union bill in 2011, and she and her spouse, Drew Fennell, were the first couple to enter into a civil union in the state. In 2013, she spearheaded the massive grassroots effort to pass a marriage equality bill, which was signed into law by Governor Jack Markell last month. “It has been such an honor to help lead an amazing group of people at Equality Delaware. We built a huge volunteer grassroots campaign unlike any seen in Delaware, which empowered citizens to reach out to their legislators,” Goodman says. “We also empowered legislators to vote for equality, because they knew their constituents had their backs. Delaware is a small state, but I like to think we accomplish big things!” -KL
