100 Women We Love: Joanna Walters

As a freelance news reporter, feature and travel writer, Joanna Walters has hiked the Grand Canyon, watched grizzlies in Alaska, canoed the lakes of Minnesota, and learned to ice climb. “It’s a terrible job, but some dyke’s gotta do it,” she laughs. A British citizen, Walters moved to New York City in 2003 after writing for numerous publications, including the U.K.’s national Sunday newspaper, The Observer. She now primarily writes for mainstream British press and has been published in The Guardian, The Times of London, Daily Express, Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar, New York Post, Grazia, Cosmopolitan and Diva magazine. Walters has commented on current affairs for the BBC and enjoys the job’s variety, covering everything from presidential elections one day, to features on police investigations into sexual assault the next. “I’m proud to be that conduit between a significant event and the outside world; sometimes it’s a disturbing story, sometimes it’s joyful,” says Walters. “The main benefit of being a lesbian and a journalist, despite not writing about gay issues very often, is visibility with the people I meet and a subliminal pro-feminist liberalism that often seeps into the tone of my work.” Now that’s a news hook worth angling for. –QW
