Laurel Golio and Diana Scholl are the Brooklyn-based dynamic duo behind We Are the Youth, a photojournalism project that captures the striking faces and stories of LGBT youth across the United States. Their Kickstarter-funded journey has taken them from Iowa to Nova Scotia to Alabama so far, capturing the personal dreams and fears of young LGBT people. They divide the labor of the project by their respective strengths: as an acclaimed writer, Scholl picks up the narrative, while Golio, with her background in visual anthropology and photography, immortalizes these teen souls on film. For this labor of love, the two have been named among the top ten online LGBT activists by the Daily Dot. “When Laurel and I dreamed up the concept for We Are the Youth, we hoped that we could combine [our] skills to share the individual stories of LGBT youth so young people with different experiences can know they are not alone,” Scholl says. “If we’re trying to send one message with the project, especially to the youth population, it’s that of diversity and acceptance; embracing who you are and recognizing that there are many different LGBT experiences, and that each is unique and valid.” -JF
