The Brooklyn-based LGBT crowd is certainly familiar with the name Sarah Michaels, but they may not know that a significant portion of the proceeds from her legendary dance parties and annual Pride party, Laid, go to deserving nonprofits. It’s pretty simple, she says: “I wanted to give to my community and communities I’ve worked with,” she says, while encouraging others to do their part too. “Whether financially or through volunteering, give to organizations that create positive change!” she commands. Past beneficiaries of Laid include the New York City AIDS Housing Network, Right Rides and Planned Parenthood Kentucky. This year, proceeds from the June 8th Laid Pride party went to VOCAL-NY.org, a grassroots organization dedicated to empowering low-income people affected by HIV/AIDS, the drug war and mass incarceration. While honing her skills as a stellar party organizer, Michaels also has owned two guitar stores, assisted the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls and worked at the Lower East Side Harm Reduction Center. Lately, outside the party scene, Michaels is a busy mom, accountant and local rock star. Her band, Dirty Excuse, recently finished recording its second full-length record. –QW
