Musicians for Harmony come together at Merkin Concert Hall for their seventh annual Concert for Peace, a program that comes out of the tragedy of 9/11, and aims to promote peace and cultural exchange through music.  This year features the US premiere of an orchestral piece from Iraq entitled Janan (which translates to Requiem), as well as a unique Walt Whitman piece and Brahm’s String Quartet in G Major, Op. 111.

Craving a little female crooning?  Jazz at Lincoln Center’s fourth annual Women in Jazz Festival is on now through October 5, spotlighting some of the most influential women in jazz as well as new faces in the industry.  This year’s line-up includes Nnenna Freelon, Ricky Lee Jones, Anne Drummond and Sherrie Maricle & The Diva Jazz Orchestra.  Jazz at Lincoln center is a non-profit arts organization seeking to enrich “artistic substance and perpetuate the democratic spirit of America’s music.” Their Women in Jazz Festival hopes to help women overcome the difficulties they encounter trying to make a name for themselves in a field that has historically been dominated by men.

If you like your sounds a little less jazzy, check out Femin(f)est, which takes place at ABC No Rio, and showcases a more punk/experimental/rock sound. Confirmed acts include Shiragirl, Plastiq Passion, In Deepest Sleep, She Eats Planets, she knows best and Mal Blum.  All profits will benefit Food Not Bombs NYC and Food Bank NYC.
