On Feb 21, The Brooklyn Lyceum opens we become, a new work by the all-female movement ensemble LAVA. The piece, which centers around the concepts of neighborhood and the “delicate balance of harmony and revolution, separatism and integration,” combines dance, theatre and acrobatics (including wrestling and trapeze) in order to “push the limits of dance and the female form.” Building on LAVA’s signature themes of women’s strength and power, the nature of relationships, and our connection to both natural and urban environments, this performance adds new elements such as
meditation, capoeira and rope climbing to the vocabulary of movement to explore the frictions and harmonies that come with sharing spaces, as well as the concept of individualism within a larger group.

The Paul Taylor Dance Company opens its three-week season at the New York City Center on Feb 25. Check out the premiere of Taylor’s latest piece, Beloved Renegade, which takes its inspiration from Walt Whitman, plus various other selections from the company repertoire, including Promethean Fire, Offenbach Overtures and De Sueños. Celebrating its 10th anniversary is the Academy Award-nominated film Dancemaker, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at Taylor’s creative process, from rehearsal to performance. Don’t miss the gala performance on Mar 3, followed by dinner, dancing and a live auction at Cipriani 42nd St
