Arizona Anti-Gay Legislation Advances to the State Senate by gomag.com April 23, 2008 |
|
On Tuesday, a proposed amendment that would ban same-sex marriage passed through the Arizona House of Representatives. If the measure is approved by the state Senate it will appear on November's ballot. The amendment, which was informally passed on Tuesday, defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
Added to the bill earlier this month was a a clause that grants unmarried couples, both hetero and homosexual, the rights afforded married heterosexual couples, without labeling these unions a marriage. The clause was dropped prior to its passage through the House on the grounds that it made the bill meaningless, according to its main sponsor Jim Weiers.
Although public opinion in the state does not favor same-sex marriage, recent polls suggest that Arizona residents are not ready to define marriage in the state constitution.
