When the American Family Association saw the Campbell Soup Company's advertisement in The Advocate's December issue, Campbell's first campaign aimed at the LGBT demographic, it immediately urged supporters to email Campbell to demand the company stop "pushing the gay agenda."
The two-page ad portrays a lesbian couple and their young son with a box of Swanson chicken broth. The AFA used its website to ask Campbell to "remain neutral in the culture war." The Association has attempted boycotts on several other companies in the past, including PepsiCo, McDonald's, and Home Depot.
However, Campbell has made it clear they will not be pulling any ads or offering apologies. Campbell representative Anthony Sanzio said, "Our plans for the Swanson brand include additional placement in The Advocate."
"Our position on this is pretty straightforward. Inclusion and diversity play an important role in our business, and that fact is reflected in our marketing plan," Sanzio said. "For more than a century, people from all walks of life have enjoyed Campbell's products, and we will continue to try to communicate in ways that are meaningful and relevant to them."
