Denver Lesbians Found Guilty Of Trespassing by gomag.com May 8, 2008 |

On Wednesday, a jury of six women found a lesbian couple guilty of trespassing and both were sentenced to 28 hours of community service and ordered to pay a $41 fine. The women were arrested when they refused to leave the Denver City Clerk's office after being denied a marriage license. The couple, Kate Burns, 44 and Shelia Schroeder 43, stated that they wanted to makes sure that the issue of marriage stayed in the public eye.
The attorney for the couple, Mari Newman told the court that "These are two courageous women who stood up for their love and to speak out about a law that's unfair."
At the time of their arrest, the women told the clerk, "We're sorry for the disturbance, but we won't leave until we're provided with the same rights as everyone else." The clerk, Stephanie O'Malley then called the police.
Although same-sex couples may register in the city of Denver they offer non of the rights afforded to same-sex couples. In 2006, Colorado voters approved an amendment that limit marriage to same-sex couples.
