Popular social networking site Facebook has removed two homophobic Serbian groups that violated the site's terms of use, UK Gay News reported.
The groups, translated as "Queeria, queers get out of Serbia," and "Stop queers - Queeria," are both open groups and had approximately 3,000 members combined. "Queeria" refers to Queeria Centre, a Serbian gay and lesbian website. The groups advocated violence against all gays and lesbians, as well as breaking and entering homes and damaging property of gay activists.
Group members sent hate mail and death threats to leading LGBT activists, circulating their names, telephone numbers and addresses. The Queeria Centre then called and emailed Facebook to request the hate groups be removed.
Facebook's UK spokesperson commented, "Facebook has looked into these groups and has confirmed that they violate Facebook's Terms of Use. As such, both groups have been removed. The Facebook team is monitoring this particular matter closely and will certainly take groups down that violate its Terms of Use." Eight more anti-gay groups were said to be under investigation.
