Five civil rights groups have petitioned the California Supreme Court to annul the passing of Prop. 8, saying that such rulings are a threat to the legal standing of every minority group, according to the Associated Press.

The Mexican-American Legal Defense Fund, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and Asian Pacific American Legal Center, along with two other groups, hope the petition will help prevent Proposition 8 from taking effect. Though other petitions to have Prop. 8 invalidated have already been filed, this is the first to do so on the grounds that it could be used to diminish the rights of racial minorities.

President of San Francisco's Equal Justice Society Eva Paterson commented, "The court ruled that to discriminate in the area of same-sex marriage was unconstitutional and violated our guaranteed equality. Why should a slim majority of Californians be able to put discrimination back into the California Constitution?"

So far, it is unknown whether or not the Supreme Court will take on the legal challenges raised by opponents of Prop. 8, but Attorney General Jerry Brown is scheduled to respond to the petitions and lawsuits soon.
