On Wednesday, April 23 a new study was released by the Rockaway Institute which reveals that gay and lesbian youth expect long-term, committed relationships and families when they get older. The subjects of the study were about 133 gay people between the ages of 16 and 22.  Researchers questioned the subjects on a number of topics including families, child and marriage and found that more than 90% of females and 80% of males expect to be in a monogamous, committed relationship after the age of 30. The desire to raise children was expressed by 67% of males and 55% of females, as well as 32% of women versus 42% of men who were likely to adopt children.

A representative from the Rockaway Institute, an LGBT research and policy center at Alliance University, told the press, "We seem to be witnessing the mainstreaming of lesbian/gay youth, with many of them wanting exactly what heterosexual youth have always wanted -- the whole American dream complete with kids and the minivan. Most agree that the primary issue is whether these youth will be given the equal legal rights to realize their couple and family aspirations just like their heterosexual peers."

Although experts believe that the outcome of the study may be reflective of the fact that those asked live in the urban environment of New York City, it is an interesting insight into the ways the LGBT community may change as this generation grows up.
