IndyCar Driver Danica Patrick Makes Racing History by gomag.com April 22, 2008 |
|
Over the weekend, IndyCar driver Danica Patrick became the first woman to win a professional race. She took home the victory at the Japan 300, silencing critics who had begun to question the talent of the popular driver. Since being named racing's Rookie of the Year in 2005, the 26 year-old Patrick has become increasingly visible, posing for Sports Illustrated and earning the most popular driver award for three seasons. This weekend's win proves that the racing darling is worth more than the hype.
After her big win, Patrick was interviewed state-side on Good Morning America about her victory, "I felt like such a wuss. I couldn't believe I was crying. I tried to stay in the car. I thought, 'I can't stay in the car. I have to get out of the seat.' They were like 'take the helmet off.' I thought, 'this is sports, right? This is raw emotion. What better time to let it out and be myself.”
Reflecting on her first win in fifty races, Patrick also told the Associated Press, "I've been asked so many times when I'm going to win my first race, and finally, no more of those questions. Dreams really do come true."
