Lesbian.Com T-Shirt Causes Controversy by GO Magazine staff August 26, 2008 |
|
Lapriss Gilbert walked into a federal building in Van Nuys yesterday to pick up her son's Social Security card. Upon entering the building she was stopped by a security guard who declared that her t-shirt was offensive, and that she immediately vacate the premises, or he would have her locked up. Her t-shirt simply said, "Lesbian.com."
The guard justified his action by citing a document called "The Rules and Regulations Governing Conduct on Federal Property", declaring this gave him the right to eject her due to clothing, when, in actuality, that document does not indicate anything of the sort.
Gilbert called her mother to call the police after she was kicked out, but another security guard had already taken the initiative to find her, and escort her to the front of the queue before the police arrived.
A spokeswoman for the Homeland Security Department made a statemtent that the security guard's actions were innapropriate and unacceptable, and that his company, who is contracted with the DHS, was notified of their position in the matter.
“As an African-American and a lesbian, I haven’t been through one day without facing some sort of discrimination…but this is just shocking,” said Gilbert of this matter.
Gilbert has not released a final statement on whether or not she will file a federal civil rights lawsuit.
