Lesbos, Greece Residents Taking Legal Action Against Term 'Lesbian' by gomag.com April 30, 2008 |
|
This week, the Associated Press reported that three residents of the Greek island of Lesbos have filed a lawsuit against a Greek gay rights group for the use of the term 'lesbian.' The small contingent would like the gay women of the world to cease using the word "lesbian" to describe their lifestyle. The island, located in the Aegean Sea, was the home of the ancient poet Sappho, who is widely known for writing verses about love between women.
Dimitris Lambrou, one of the three plaintiffs and publisher of a magazine about Greek religion and technology, said in a statement, "Our geographical designation has been usurped by certain ladies who have no connection whatsoever with Lesbos. He and the other plaintiffs claim that the use of the term lesbian, "insults the identity" of the island's residents.
The small group decided to sue an association called the Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece to begin their crusade against the use of the world worldwide. It is the only officially registered gay group in Greece. The case will be heard in Greek courts on June 10.
To this day, Lesvos remain a popular lesbian travel destination.
