An anti-gay marriage group in Maine announced yesterday that it has gathered enough signatures to get the issue of overturning the state’s marriage equality legislation on the ballots in November.

Mark Mutty from Stand for Marriage Maine announced that it took a mere four weeks to collect 55,087 signatures. Before a referendum is placed on the ballot, however, the secretary of state must certify the signatures.

If the signatures are certified, Maine’s law granting marriage equality, which was supposed to go into effect on September 12, will be put on hold until after the election.
