Meghan McCain to New York Republicans: "Grant Same-Sex Couples the Right to Marry" by Gizem Unsalan May 25, 2009 |
|
Meghan McCain, daughter of former presidential candidate John McCain, wrote an open letter to New York Republicans on Friday urging them to grant same-sex couples the right to marry.
“For me, this is about treating all of my friends, and all of our brothers, sisters, children and grandchildren the same as I want to be treated,” McCain wrote in her letter published in the opinion section of New York’s Daily News. “Equality under the law and personal freedoms are what make America the greatest country in the world, and they are core values that I hold as a Republican.”
McCain, who also spoke in defense of gay marriage at the Log Cabin Republican Convention in April, reiterated something she wrote after the convention in her letter last Friday: “People may always have a difference of opinion... but championing a position that wants to treat people unequally isn't just un-Republican. At its fundamental core, it's un-American."
The New York Assembly passed a marriage equality bill, 89-52, earlier this month. Now the state Senate will vote on the issue before it adjourns on June 20. With that in mind, McCain called on Republican senators to vote in favor of the bill. “I believe marriage equality will soon come to New York,” she wrote. “My hope is that Republican senators will offer their support and make the difference to pass the marriage bill.”
