New Mexico Photographer Sued Over Commitment Ceremony by gomag.com April 15, 2008 |
|
This week the Associated Press reported that on April 9th, the New Mexico Human Rights Commission ruled in favor of Vanessa Willock. In 2006 Willock filed a lawsuit against Elaine Huguenin, a wedding photographer who refused to be hired to take pictures of Willock's commitment ceremony. She cited her personal religious beliefs as the reason she declined the job. Huguenin has been ordered to pay $6, 637 for Willock's legal fees.
The Alliance Defense Fund, a conservative Christian legal organization is planning on appealing the ruling. ADF senior counsel Jordan Lorence said that refusing service based on religious beliefs is a right protected by the First Amendment. He plans on appealing the ruling to the fullest extent of the law.
