According to a report by Newsday, the New York State Senate could vote on gay marriage as early as next week.

Senator Pedro Espada, Jr., a Democrat and leader of the new governing Republican-led coalition, said there will be a vote on the marriage equality bill if the Republicans and Democrats, with a fragile balance of 32-30, can maintain control of the chamber.

Senator Espada and Republican Senator Dean Skelos claimed power of the Senate on Monday, after a coup to strip the Democrats of their majority, which they contest was illegal. On Wednesday, Democrats ensured the chamber door remained locked throughout the day, and the new coalition under Espada and Skelos’s control was unable to hold a session.
