New York State Assembly Passes Gay Marriage Bill

The New York State Assembly voted 89-52 on Tuesday to pass gay marriage. Now the legislation, which was sponsored by openly gay assembly member Daniel O’Donnell, will move on to the state Senate for a vote.

Shortly after the assembly’s vote, O’Donnell said, “Many of my colleagues who voted yes are individuals of profound faith who were able to draw a distinction between civil and religious marriage. I commend every one of them for casting this courageous vote. I am confident they are standing on the right side of history.”

This is not the first time the New York State Assembly has voted on same-sex marriage legislation. Back in June 2007, the assembly passed a similar bill to legalize gay marriage in the state when it voted 85-61. That bill, however, was stalled when it passed on to the Republican-controlled New York Senate.

Yet gay marriage supporters are hopeful that the Senate will vote differently this time around. On Tuesday, for instance, five Republicans in the New York State Assembly voted for the gay marriage bill, as opposed to the four Republican assembly members who voted “yes” on it in 2007.

One of the leading supporters of gay marriage, Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese urged the state Senate to pass the legislation when it comes time to vote. “It’s great to see the Assembly strongly re-affirm its support for marriage equality,” Solmonese said. “It’s time for the Senate, which now has pro-equality leadership, to ensure that loving, committed same-sex couples in New York can have the same rights and responsibilities under the law as loving, committed different-sex couples.”
