NY Hockey Criticized For Homophobic Slurs At Games by gomag.com April 18, 2008 |

On Tuesday, gay rights groups met with representatives from the New York Rangers hockey team as well as Madison Square Garden to deal with the growing problem of anti-gay slurs being yelled by fans at New York hockey games. The problem has come to light recently after the release of a New York Times story, addressing the issue. In the piece the Times described the frustration of gay fans with the growing atmosphere of homophobia at the games. It was also reported that often at the games, when the Gay New York Hockey Association appears on the monitors above the ice boos come from the audience.
GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) executive director Kevin Jennings told the Times; ''The Rangers and MSG/Cablevision agreed to implement a specific action plan based on the recommendations we made at the meeting. We are very excited about their willingness to engage in dialogue, take actions and become an active participant in creating a less hostile atmosphere at Madison Square Garden.”
Jeff Kagen, the head of Gay Hockey Association said he was happy with the meeting. A public service announcement before the games requesting more sensitivity.
