Pennsylvania Moving Toward Further Bans On Same-Sex Marriage by gomag.com May 6, 2008 |
|
On Monday, a key anti-gay marriage and civil union amendment passed through a major committee in Pennsylvania and will soon go to the state Senate floor for a vote. The Senate Appropriations Committee voted 18-8 to send the bill, which would amend the state constitution, to be voted on by the state Senate. The earliest the amendment could appear on the ballot would be 2009. If it is approved by the Senate it then it would have to be passed by the House and another round in the legislature.
Democratic Senator Connie Williams said of the proposed bill, "Pennsylvania's constitution was never intended to be a toll that restricts people's rights." Williams was addressing a group of protesters who were demonstrating outside the Capitol, demanding the bill be stopped.
Despite opposition at the Capitol, a recent poll by Susquehanna Polling and Research found that most resident's of the state do not approve of same-sex marriage but may be in favor of civil unions for gay couples.
