This week, Pope Benedict XVI is making his tour through the United States, including a stop in New York City. Activists in New York are hoping that the Pope's visit will help them bring attention to many issues including gay rights. Many of the groups are planning vigils in New York and Washington DC.

Gay Catholic Activists have planned a protest Tuesday alongside the Pope's motorcade in Washington DC. They have also issued a compilation of statements made by the Pope that they consider to be anti-gay. At the forefront of important issues for gay activists this weekend are his denunciation of both gay adoption rights and same-sex marriage.

DiginityUSA's executive director, Marianne Duddy-Burke issued a statement about the group's involvement in the protest; "He has issued some of the most hurtful and extreme rhetoric against our community of any religious leader in history, and we want to call him into account for the damage that he's done." Burke also hopes the protests will be coupled with a celebration of the triumphs the gay Catholic community has had in the last few years, such as the increasing number of parishes that welcome openly gay members.

New Ways Ministry, another gay Catholic group hosted a news conference at which one speaker invited the Pope into his home in Massachusetts where he lives with his partner and adopted children,
"We invite you to spend a day, a meal, a weekend with us. We don't want to serve as a poster-family for gay Catholics. ... We will just be ourselves, in all our confusion, aspiration, need and joy."

The Pope has yet to respond to any of the protests planned for his visit to the United States.
