Prop 8-Related Rallies Still Raging in California by Quinn Wonderling June 1, 2009 |
|
Approximately 3,000 same-sex marriage supporters gathered at a "Meet in the Middle 4 Equality" rally in Fresno on Saturday. Organized by the Courage Campaign, demonstrators voiced support for a new ballot initiative that would overturn Proposition 8 in 2010.
The very next day, hundreds of Prop 8 supporters met at Fresno City Hall for a rally of their own, according to the Associated Press. The ballot measure banning gay marriage in the state passed last November, and legal efforts challenging Prop 8's constitutionality, finalized last Tuesday, failed to overturn it.
"They are losing ground. We are gaining ground. When people say [same-sex marriage is] inevitable, they just don't understand," Fresno Pastor Jim Franklin addressed the crowd. Franklin was a prominent organizer of the event. Several counter-protesters also attended the rally, shouting "Shame on you!" at the speakers, including former Fresno Mayor Alan Autry, and other participants.
Marriage equality opponents are expected to rally in San Diego soon.
