Last week, a lesbian couple in Seattle, Washington were asked to stop kissing at a Mariners baseball game by an usher who claimed that another fan had complained about hteir public display of affection. The altercation was almost immediately picked up by local tv and radio news and blogs many of which were in an uproar over the incident occurring in the generally gay-friendly city of Seattle. Josh Friedes of Equal Rights Washington made a statement regarding the incident, "Certain individuals have not yet caught up. Those people see a gay or lesbian couple and they stare or say something. This is one of the challenges of being gay. Everyday things can become sources of trauma."

The Mariners were playing the Boston Red Sox on May 26 when Sirbrina Guerrero and her date were approached by an usher in the 3rd inning, who said that their kissing was not appropriate. Of the incident Guerrero said,
"I was really just shocked. Seattle is so gay-friendly. There was a couple like seven rows ahead making out. We were just showing affection."

A spokeswoman for the Mariners, Rebecca Hale, told reporters that an investigation of the event was taking place;
"We have a strict non-discrimination policy at the Seattle Mariners and at Safeco Field, and when we do enforce the code of conduct it is based on behavior, not on the identity of those involved."

Guerrero reported that she had been apologized to by guest services at Safeco Field.
